Whether you’re a budget-conscious traveler or just looking for unique experiences without breaking the bank, I’ve compiled a list of 21 free things to do in this small but charming capital city. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, Reykjavik has something for everyone.

Hallgrimskirkja
Hallgrimskirkja is one of Reykjavik’s most famous structures, and best of all – it’s free! Marvel at the unique architecture of Reykjavik’s iconic Lutheran church. Hallgrimskirkja is completely free to enter and explore, however there is a fee to take the lift to the top for a panoramic view of the city and surrounding mountains.
Kópavogskirkja Church
If you love Hallgrimskirkja, then make sure to venture to Kópavogskirkja. Kópavogskirkja is another striking church with a modern design. The serene surroundings make it a perfect spot for contemplation and photography, thanks to some incredible views out towards Reykjavik.
Reykjavik Cathedral
More traditional in architecture than Hallgrimskirkja and Kópavogskirkja, the historic Reykjavik Cathedral is also worth a visit. Reykjavik Cathedral is a charming structure in the heart of the city.
Grotta Lighthouse
Experience the tranquility of Grotta Lighthouse, especially during the magical midnight sun or Northern Lights. This coastal gem provides a peaceful escape from the city hustle.
Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach
Experience the unique Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach, where you can relax in the naturally heated seawater. Enjoy the golden sands of the artificial beach and take a dip in the waters.
Reykjavik Harbour
Reykjavik Harbour is a vibrant hub with fishing boats, charming cafes, and stunning views. Take a leisurely walk along the waterfront and enjoy the maritime atmosphere.
Rainbow Street
Initially painted a rainbow to celebrate LGBT Pride, the rainbow is now a permanent fixture in the city on the road leading up to Hallgrimskirkja. A perfect photo spot in Reykjavik!
Elliðaárdalur Valley Park
Escape to Elliðaárdalur Valley Park, an oasis of nature in the heart of Reykjavik. Follow along the one of the trails, enjoy the soothing sounds of the Elliðaá River, and appreciate the diverse flora. You might even get to see some wildlife if you’re lucky!
Tjörnin
Reykjavik’s picturesque pond in the heart of the city, Tjörnin is surrounded by charming houses and lush greenery. It’s an ideal spot for bird watching and a lovely place to relax during the warmer months. During the winter, Tjörnin freezes over and becomes the go to place for ice skating and games of hockey by the locals.
Heiðmörk
For nature enthusiasts, Heiðmörk is a must-visit. A few miles away from Reykjavik, this vast nature reserve offers a network of hiking and biking trails, allowing you to immerse yourself in Iceland’s stunning landscapes.
Þúfa
One for the art lovers to appreciate. Þúfa is an artistic mound created from recycled materials. The views from the top provide a different perspective of Reykjavik and its surroundings.
Hellisgerði
Explore Hellisgerði, a beautiful park with lava formations hidden underneath the moss, right in central Reykjavik. It’s thought that the park is home to a few mystical beings, or Hidden Folk, including elves.
Sun Voyager
Another famous landmark in Reykjavik is the Sun Voyager, an iconic steel sculpture resembling a Viking ship. This waterfront monument offers a fantastic view of the sea and Mount Esja, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.
Einar Jónsson Art Museum Sculpture Garden
Whilst the accompanying museum comes with an entry fee, the sculpture garden is free. Explore a collection of over 20 sculptures by the renowned Icelandic artist Einar Johnson. One of Reykjavik’s cultural gems.
Reykjavik City Hall
It won’t take you long, but make sure you check out the giant 3D printed map of Iceland, located on the ground floor of Reykjavik City Hal.
Harpa Concert Hall
Marvel at the architectural brilliance of Harpa Concert Hall, located by the waterfront. Even if you don’t catch a performance, the building itself is a work of art, especially when illuminated at night. You’re free to walk around inside, and the interior is just as stunning and unique as the exterior. Visiting Harpa is definitely one of my favourite free things to do in Reykjavik.
Hafnarfjordur Museum
For a taste of local history, head to Hafnarfjordur Museum. This open-air museum offers insight into Iceland’s maritime heritage, featuring historic buildings and artifacts. The museum is made up of 9 exhibitions in 6 houses and is an interesting stop.
Admire the Street Art
Reykjavik is adorned with vibrant street art. Take a self-guided walking tour to discover the city’s colorful murals, each telling a unique story and adding to the city’s colourful artistic spirit.
Reykjavik Flea Market
Peruse the Reykjavik Flea Market for a taste of local culture on a weekend. You might find unique Icelandic souvenirs, vintage treasures, and handmade crafts. A worthy visit, and one that could end up not costing you a penny.
Austurvollur Public Square
Austurvollur is Reykjavik’s central square and is a lively gathering place surrounded by cafes and historic buildings, it’s perfect for people-watching and absorbing the city’s vibe. If you’re lucky enough to be in Reykjavik at Christmas, you won’t be able to miss the Christmas Tree erected here!
